Akshar going to school
This month July 2012 is an eventful month for me, with my birthday on July 13th.
My little grandson Akshar, aged 1 year 11 months, started going to school from first week of July !
There are some pre-primary schools for 2 year old children, called play schools, where children interact and play with other children of similar age.
Toys and drawing books are provided in such schools and what the teachers do is simply Baby-sitting. But the punch line is that they are charging about Rs. 30,000 per annum...

Our Madurai trip
On 2nd July 2012, I and my wife went to Madurai of TN and halted there. 3rd July is Guru Poornima and therefore, during early hours we visited the local Meenakshi temple and saw both Goddess Meenakshi and Sundareshwara.
After breakfast on 3rd, we proceeded to Kurtalam, a place 150 km away...where there is one Shakti-Peetham known as Siddheshwari Peetham, founded by a great sage Mouna Swamy some centuries ago.
The present Swamiji there is Siddheshwarananda Bharati Theertha. He invited me to participate in a book-release function in the Peetham on the Guru Purnima day. The book "Siddhashrama Yogulu", written by the Swamiji was released on that day.
Later we went round the place and saw the Pratyangira temple at the Peetham. In the evening we proceeded to a place called Tenkasi, about 14 km away. There the temple's Raja Gopuram is astounding. When you approach the Gopuram, strong winds try to push you out... but when you just cross the Gopuram, the winds reverse the direction and push you in, towards the temple !! We had darshan of Lord Shiva there, returned to Kurtalam and night halted.
The next morning ie., on 4th, we saw the local picturesque waterfalls at Kurtalam. It is believed that taking bath in the waterfalls cures certain diseases. Adjoining the waterfalls, there is a Shiva temple known as Kurtaleshwara swamy temple. The Goddess there is Parashakti. We performed puja at the temple and proceeded back to Madurai.
Enroute, we went to Sri Villiputhur and saw the temple of Goda Devi, the consort of Ranganatha. The story goes to say that Goda Devi worships Lord Ranganatha (Vishnu) with a Mala (Garland) worn by her. This was noticed by her father who admonished her.... but Lord Ranganatha appears in his dream that night and tells him that he cherishes only the Mala worn by Goda Devi and that the practice should go on... Goda Kalyanam later takes place in which Goda Devi was wedded to Lord Ranganatha.
The night we spent at Madurai and on 5th, we proceeded to Trichy, which is 140 km away. We traveled another 10 km and saw a place called Srirangam, where there is another Lord Ranganatha temple. Later we visited one more famous place just two km away called Jambukeshwaran (Thiruvanai Kovil), where there is a Shiva Temple. The Shivalingam there is called Jala-lingam, as water oozes continuously from its base.
The consort of Lord Shiva there is known as Akhilandeshwari. Adi Shankaracharya moved the power of the Goddess into her Ear-studs, called Thaatankas, where there is Srichakra engraved. People say that looking at the Thatankas will shower Long life and prosperity on the devotees....
